After Charlottesville, reflecting on America’s historical lows

- Re: Diane Dunn, David C. Dodge,

“Trump doubles down on hate,” Aug. 17 editorial.

I am in tears thinking of the new low our country has sunk to. I have seen videos of the president’s reply to queries about the events at Charlottesville and I see only a person who I believe that in his heart is a white supremacist.

As a citizen by choice (naturalized), I have been proud over the last 57 years to say so. I am a survivor of World War II, of the bombing of London by the Nazis. To see these groups here and accepted here, I fear for the future of our country.

Thank you for your well-reasoned and brave editorial calling for ways to avoid this poison being spread throughout our society. The unhinged man in the White House needs medical help and to be relieved from the burden of representing those of us who respect our fellow human beings.

Reflecting on all the progress this great nation has made from the Civil Rights Act to Obama, then to see the Trump presidency — including Charlottesville, followed by Donald Trump’s racist words on Tuesday, which gave aid and comfort to the white supremacists — I am now experiencing that same feeling I had on the day JFK was shot.

Perhaps if all Americans would quietly reflect on the fact that whites will be a minority by 2040-45, then with this inevitability, we could redirect the hate, anger, violence and fear of the extreme right into something more constructive and nation-building.
