MAN’S LEG AMPUTATED AFTER HE WAS HIT BY TRAIN

A man’s leg had to be amputated Tuesday after he was hit by a train near downtown.

The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition after the accident, which happened about 2:15 p.m., said Jesse Ortiz, a fire department battalion chief. The train’s conductors saw the man shortly before he was hit but were unable to stop the train, Ortiz said.

There is no legal crossing near where the crash happened, Oritz said.

Denver homicide victim is identified.

A man who was fatally stabbed in Denver has been identified. Georgios Gatsiopoul­os, 57, was pronounced dead at Denver Health medical center Monday evening, according to the coroner’s office.

Gatsiopoul­os was stabbed Monday in the area of East Ellsworth Avenue and South Pennsylvan­ia Street. He was taken to the medical center, where he was pronounced dead.

Death-penalty case could cause courtroom remodeling.

A judge presiding over El Paso County’s first death penalty case in a decade said he would request the jury box be enlarged to accommodat­e a panel of 12 people plus six alternates.

Judge Gregory Werner ruled Monday that six alternate jurors would be seated to protect against the possibilit­y of a mistrial in the double-murder case against Glen Law Galloway.

The case is expected to last three months or longer. The expected cost of the case was not made public Monday during a brief hearing.

Broncos receiver Sanders cited in traffic accident.

PARKER» Denver Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders got into a traffic accident Tuesday morning and was cited, along with another driver, for careless driving.

Sanders was driving a Range Rover down a median, with emergency blinkers flashing, when an 18year-old driver cut into the median and collided with the SUV, said Deputy Chad Teller, a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

The collision happened at about 7:45 a.m. on southbound South Chambers Road near Mainstreet in Parker. Sanders complained of a headache. The teen complained of a sore right hand. Neither driver was taken to a hospital.
