Buffs’ Julmisse arrested following road incident

- By Mitchell Byars

University of Colorado cornerback Anthony Julmisse was arrested after witnesses said he rear-ended a car and then stole the other driver’s cellphone when that driver took pictures of the damage.

Julmisse, 19, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of robbery, firstdegree criminal trespass of a vehicle, criminal mischief and careless driving.

According to an affidavit released Tuesday, Julmisse was driving a friend’s Toyota SUV around 7 p.m. when he rear-ended a Toyota Corolla stopped at a red light at the intersection of 33rd Street and Arapahoe Avenue.

The driver of the Corolla told police Julmisse pulled up alongside his car and both drivers got out to inspect the damage to the Corolla’s bumper, which police noted was extensive.

Julmisse tried to pay the driver of the Corolla $20 and then $40, but the other driver declined and took pictures on his cellphone of the SUV Julmisse was driving.

Another man got out of the SUV Julmisse was driving and got into the driver’s seat while Julmisse went into the passenger seat, and the driver of the Corolla also got into his car, holding his cellphone in his hand.

The driver of the Corolla said Julmisse suddenly reached through the open window of the cars and snatched the phone from him before the SUV drove off. The driver of the Corolla began to follow the SUV and said that Julmisse then threw the phone out of the window a few blocks away, damaging it.

Police interviewed a different witness who also said he saw Julmisse reach into the other car and take something from the driver before leaving the scene.

While the phone was damaged, police were able to pull images off the phone and find the SUV’s owner, who identified Julmisse as the driver.

Julmisse admitted that he was driving the SUV for a friend who had too much to drink, and admitted to the crash. He initially denied taking the cellphone, but then later told police he did take his cellphone to keep his friend out of trouble.

This is Julmisse’s second arrest this year. He was arrested in July on suspicion of assault, harassment and domestic violence.

Julmisse was suspended after that incident and was on suspension when the second arrest occurred.

CU officials said on Monday that they were reviewing the case.

Julmisse, a sophomore, is free on bond.
