YORK» Maria Sharapova’s first NEW match at a major tournament since her doping suspension comes against No. 2-seeded Simona Halep at the U.S. Open.

That attention-grabbing firstround matchup was determined by Friday’s draw, which also eliminated the possibilit­y of a men’s final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal by placing them on the same side of the bracket. They could face each other in the semifinals at the U.S. Open, the only major tournament where they have never met head-tohead. Play begins Monday.

VEGAS» A federal judge in California LAS knocked out a class-action lawsuit that had been filed on behalf of fight fans and pay-per-view subscriber­s upset that boxer Manny Pacquiao of the Philippine­s wasn’t 100 percent healthy for his May 2015 fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas.

Mayweather won a 12-round decision in an event that drew record cable TV viewership and criticism that the matchup between two of the best fighters of a generation failed to live up its billing.

RSL player arrested and charged.

Real Salt Lake forward Ricardo Velazco has been arrested on accusation­s he had unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

He was subsequent­ly suspended by Major League Soccer.

Authoritie­s said Velazco, 24, had sexual intercours­e with a 15-year-old girl in May in the Salt Lake City suburb of Draper. He was 23 years old at the time.

Suns’ Knight undergoes surgery.

Phoenix Suns guard Brandon Knight had surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, a month after he sustained the season-ending injury in a charity game in Florida.

The Suns said second-round pick Davon Reed has undergone surgery to repair a torn meniscus and will be sidelined an estimated four to six months.
