CDOT SAFETY CAMPAIGN LOOKS AT I-25

COUNTY» A stretch DOUGLAS of accident-prone Interstate 25 south of the metro area, where two state troopers have been struck and killed in recent years, is getting special attention from highway officials keen on reducing the number of collisions there.

The Colorado Department of Transporta­tion is reminding drivers of the hazards of the 18-mile portion of I-25 between C-470 and Monument, emphasizin­g the number of crashes in recent years.

From 2011 to 2015, there were 5,537 crashes on I-25 between C-470 and Colorado Springs. Eighty percent were rear-end and sideswipes between vehicles traveling in the same direction, along with fixed-object crashes.

CDOT, Douglas County and Colorado Springs are looking at what can be done to improve safety along the highway.

Police interrupt burglars at pawn shop during gun, jewelry heist.

Burglars who were interrupte­d by a police officer as they were carting guns and jewelry out of a pawn shop dropped three guns and sped away in a pickup early Wednesday, authoritie­s say. Several burglars dropped three shotguns near the entrance to the Pawn Bank, 1360 W. Littleton Blvd., climbed into a red Ford diesel pickup and bolted, Cooper said. The burglars pried open the glass front door of the pawn shop open and used a bike rack to keep it open, Cooper said. They smashed several glass display cases, he said.

Man’s arm severed in workplace accident.

A man’s arm was severed Wednesday morning in a workplace accident. Loveland Fire and Rescue officials say the industrial accident happened at a UPS Customer Center. Battalion Chief Michael Cerovski said the man’s arm was detached by a conveyor belt. Emergency responders recovered the limb and took it to the hospital.

More than 40 arrested on drug charges.

Authoritie­s say they have made more than 40 arrests over three days stemming from an investigat­ion into narcotics distributi­on in several western Kansas and eastern Colorado counties. Suspected crimes include distributi­on and possession of methamphet­amine and marijuana, weapons violations and other drug offenses. Arrests were made in the western Kansas counties of Cheyenne, Ellis, Greeley, Logan, Rawlins, Sherman, Thomas, and Wallace as well as the Colorado counties of Cheyenne and Kit Carson. More arrests are expected.

Pistol-packing scooter driver assaulted; firearm stolen.

A man packing a firearm in a hip holster was knocked off his scooter and had his gun stolen, according to Colorado Springs police.

The victim told police he was riding a scooter on the sidewalk about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday when he came across a man lying down, blocking the scooter’s path. The victim asked the man to move, which aggravated the man.

The man who had been lying down struck the scooter driver, knocking the victim off the vehicle before stealing the gun. The suspect, now armed, fled on foot. Officers arrested the suspect, identified as Clarence Jones, not far from the scene and recovered the gun.
