Three things to watch
CARDINALS VS. BRONCOS Three things to watch in the Broncos’ final preseason game Thursday night against Arizona at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. SLOTER TIME
Kyle Sloter, the undrafted rookie quarterback from Northern Colorado, will play the entire game, barring injury. He was originally slated to play the second half, but backup quarterback Paxton Lynch is out with a sprained shoulder. Sloter, who has completed 16-of20 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns this preseason, could be playing for a spot on the 53-man roster as the backup to Trevor Siemian, a scenario that seemed highly unlikely when training camp began at the end of July. WIDE RECEIVER BATTLE Joseph has said on multiple occasions this month that the Broncos will likely keep six wide receivers. Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders are the starters, Bennie Fowler has lined up as the third wide receiver throughout the preseason, and Isaiah McKenzie, the fifth-round pick out of Georgia, will be on the roster by virtue of being named the starting punt returner. Cody Latimer, the fourthyear receiver out of Indiana, has missed much of the last couple of weeks with a knee injury, but Joseph said Latimer wouldn’t necessarily need to play Thursday in order for the coaching staff to make a decision about his status on the roster. “We know enough about Cody,” Joseph said. “If he does not play this week, we can still decide if he helps our football team.” DEFENSIVE LINE
Shelby Harris, a third-year defensive end who signed a futures contract with the Broncos in January, was the star of the Broncos’ game last week against Green Bay, registering three sacks of Packers backup quarterback Brett Hundley. Harris hasn’t played in a regular-season game since 2015, when he played for Oakland, but he has a strong shot at securing a roster spot with the Broncos with a similar performance Thursday. Perhaps a more important issue for the defensive line is simply getting through the game healthy.
