For the third year, a group of Denver’s prominent salon owners, fashion designers, technical experts and models joined forces to celebrate Colorado’s Latin heritage by staging Historias, a blockbuster show benefiting El Centro Humanitario Para Los Trabajadores.

This nonprofit organization is headquartered at 2660 California St. in Denver’s Curtis Park neighborhood, and was founded to promote the rights and well-being of day laborers and domestic workers by protecting them from wage theft, dangerous working conditions and other forms of exploitation.

Clients can also receive training in job-skills development, computer literacy, advocacy and leadership. Sarah Shikes is the executive director and Cec Ortiz is president of the board.

Historias was held at EXDO Event Center and featured hair and makeup by Charlie Price and the Beauty Underground team; Planet Laboratories; Artemis & Birch; Berenices; Stephan Lauren; Beauty Underground, Oracle, The Look, Cha Cha Romero’s Vanity Dollz Salon and Beto’s Salon.

The show produced by Alicia McQuilliams and hosted by Michelle B, the 2017 Miss Universo Latina Newcomer, and DJ Markie, also had clothing and accessories by Maggie Burns for Marie Margot; Chris Haven, FashioNation, Ornamental Noose and others.

“Why do we do this?” asked Price, who is also a member of the El Centro Humanitario board, “because we stand for the principle that no human being is illegal. We’re also committed to ending stigma, racism and bigotry.”

Bev Black, Kimberly Mitchell, Aimee Elise, Noberto Mojardin, Ron and Tiaja Pierre and Robin Fulton were among the guests.
