RAPIDS LOSE, WATCH PLAYOFF ATTEMPT FAIL

- — The Associated Press

Maynor Figueroa and Roland Lamah scored in the first 10 minutes and FC Dallas snapped a 10game winless stretch with a 2-0 win over the Rapids.

Dallas (10-9-11), the Supporters’ Shield winner last year, won for the first time since July 22. It was the third longest winless run in club history. Colorado (7-18-5) was eliminated from playoff contention.

In the sixth minute, Mauro Diaz played a quick free kick and Hernan Grana’s cross went untouched across the middle for an unmarked Figueroa at the back post. In the ninth, Grana ran past the defense to the end line for a chipped ball and found a trailing Lamah for a redirection at the near post.

Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez had his eighth shutout of the season. Colorado’s Tim Howard entered with two straight clean sheets in the series, but the Rapids have conceded 13 goals in their last six away games.

Mickelson leads U.S. in Presidents Cup.

JERSEY CITY,

N.J.» Phil Mickelson is the voice of experience in team competition, and there’s no comparison. He was on the putting green Wednesday morning at the Presidents Cup, explaining to some of the six rookies on the American team why the teams might change for the final day of practice, the schedule after the team photo, just about anything short of how to tie their shoes.

Mickelson has played in the Presidents Cup every year since it began in 1994. He has played in every Ryder Cup since 1995. Add them up and this will be his 23rd consecutive time playing in a team event.

For someone like PGA champion Justin Thomas, playing in his first one, that can be hard to fathom.

“I can’t, especially because I was 1 when he playing in his first one, which is really crazy to think,” Thomas said.

Playing on so many Presidents Cup teams has mainly been a happy occasion. The Americans have lost only one of them, in 1998 at Royal Melbourne, and tied the International team in 2003 in South Africa.

The International team, with Nick Price as captain for a third straight time, gets another chance to end a losing streak that is getting out of hand.

More charges for Florida DL.

FLA.» Suspended Florida GAINESVILLE, defensive lineman Jordan Smith is facing four more felony complaints.

According to Alachua County court records, the Gainesville Police Department filed four sworn complaints against Smith. Police say Smith used the credit card of a Virginia man to pay $1,007.82 for his Gainesville apartment. Smith faces two fraud charges and two grand theft larceny charges.

A redshirt freshman from Lithonia, Georgia, Smith is one of nine players involved in the credit card scandal. University of Florida police say Smith used the same card to deposit $800 into his campus bookstore debit account. Smith faces 18 felony complaints in that related case.

The nine remain indefinitely suspended from the team while the State Attorney’s Office reviews the case and weighs formal charges.

Vonn repeats quest to face men.

Lindsey Vonn’s request to race against men in a World Cup downhill will be studied again by the International Ski Federation (FIS) next week.

The United States team will make the formal proposal at preseason meetings hosted by FIS in Zurich, the governing body said.

The revived plan is expected to involve a race at Lake Louise, Canada, in the 2018-19 season.

In 2012, FIS rejected a previous request on behalf of alpine skiing great Vonn because its rules bar mixed-gender races.
