A man with a knife stabbed two women to death Sunday at the main train station in the southern French city of Marseille as he reportedly shouted “Allahu akbar!” — an attack the Islamic State claimed was the work of one its “soldiers.”

French soldiers shot the man to death after the attacks and authoritie­s were working to determine if he had links to Islamic extremism.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, who went to Marseille to meet with authoritie­s and troops at the scene, said police have video that shows the man attacking a woman, running away, then coming back and attacking a second woman.

Sikh man wins leadership of federal political party.

TORONTO» A Sikh man has become the first visible minority to claim the leadership of a federal party in Canada.

Jagmeet Singh claimed a first-ballot triumph Sunday in the contest for leader of the leftist New Democrat party. He is 38.

Singh wears a turban, as is traditiona­l for Sikhs, and he recently made headlines for his calm reaction to being confronted by an angry heckler who accused him of wanting to bring Sharia law to Canada even though he is not Muslim. He asked his guests to chant “love and courage” when confronted.

“It” edges out “American Made” at box office.

After dipping to No. 2 last weekend, “It” has regained control of the North American box office in its fourth weekend in theaters.

The movie beat the new Tom Cruise film “American Made” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.” But it was a close race that could shift when studios report actual weekend totals Monday.

According to studio estimates on Sunday, the Stephen King adaptation and box office juggernaut added $17.3 million to take the top spot. The film now boasts $291.2 million in domestic grosses.

Media titan Samuel “Si” Newhouse is dead at 89.

Jr., the low-profile billionair­e media mogul who ran the parent company of some of the nation’s most prestigiou­s magazines, died Sunday. He was 89.

Newhouse’s death was confirmed by his family, who said he died at his New York home.

The chairman of Conde Nast since 1975, Si Newhouse, as he was known, bought and remade The New Yorker and Details magazines and revived Vanity Fair. Other magazines in the Conde Nast stable included Vogue, Wired, Glamour, W, GQ , and Self.

Donald Malarkey, portrayed in “Band of Brothers,” dies at 96.

Donald Malarkey, a World War II paratroope­r who was awarded the Bronze Star after parachutin­g behind enemy lines at Normandy to destroy German artillery on D-Day, has died. He was 96. Malarkey was one of several members of “Easy Company” to be widely portrayed in the HBO miniseries, “Band of Brothers.” He died Sept. 30 of age-related causes.

Malarkey fought across France, the Netherland­s and Belgium and with Easy Company and fought off Nazi advances while surrounded at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.
