3 COACHES CHARGED IN BRIBERY PROBE OUT ON $100K BONDS

YORK» Five men arrested two NEW weeks ago, including three assistant basketball coaches connected to the FBI investigat­ion that centered on bribery within college basketball, were released on $100,000 bonds after appearing at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse in lower Manhattan on Tuesday.

Arizona’s Emanuel “Book” Richardson, USC’s Tony Bland, Auburn’s Chuck Person, Adidas’ Merl Code, and custom clothier and former NBA referee Rashan Michel all appeared in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Katharine H. Parker.

Federal prosecutor­s in New York announced charges of fraud and corruption against 10 people on Sept. 26. Each of the coaches is charged with bribery conspiracy, solicitati­on of bribes, honest services fraud conspiracy, honest service fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and Travel Act conspiracy. The U.S. Department of Justice said each of the coaches faces a maximum sentence of 80 years in prison.

The probe focused on coaches being paid tens of thousands of dollars to steer NBA-bound players toward sports agents, financial advisors and apparel companies.

Australian quits tennis match.

A year after being fined for “tanking” a match at the Shanghai Masters, Nick Kyrgios quit another one altogether.

The temperamen­tal Australian argued several times with the chair umpire during his first-round match against Steve Johnson. After losing the tiebreaker 7-6 (5), Kyrgios shook hands with Johnson at the net then with the chair umpire before packing his bags and walking off court.

American John Isner beat Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6).

• Elina Svitolina and Venus Williams led the first-round winners at the Hong Kong Open.

Top seed Svitolina lost the first three games against Zarina Diyas but recovered to post a 6-4, 7-6 (2) win.

Williams, the second seed, was playing her first match since losing to Sloane Stephens in the semifinals of the U.S. Open and eased to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Risa Ozaki.

Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki raced to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Eugenie Bouchard in less than an hour, while fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska beat Zhang Ling 6-1, 6-2.

Tennessee going with Guarantano.

Tennessee decided to go with Jarrett Guarantano as its starting quarterbac­k for Saturday’s game against South Carolina.

Guarantano, a redshirt freshman, will take over for Quinten Dormady, who started the first five games for the Vols. Dormady, a junior, has eight turnovers in his first five games, including six intercepti­ons.

2 WNBA players denied visas.

WNBA players Emma Cannon and Brionna Jones were denied visas for entry into Turkey with their Russian team this week, fallout from a diplomatic dispute between the United States and Turkey.

The U.S. on Sunday suspended the issuing of visas for Turkish citizens hoping to visit or study in the United States after Turkey arrested U.S. consulate employee Metin Topuz last week on allegation­s of espionage.

Ali Enterprise­s files $30M lawsuit.

CHICAGO» Muhammad Ali Enterprise­s filed a $30 million federal lawsuit against Fox Broadcasti­ng Company, claiming Fox used without permission the late boxer’s identity in a video that aired just before its broadcast of the Super Bowl in February.

In the lawsuit filed in Chicago, Muhammad Ali Enterprise­s contends that Fox used Ali’s “name, image and likeness as the centerpiec­e of its three-minute promotiona­l video” before its broadcast of the game that attracted a national audience of 111 million viewers.
