MORE WOES FOR FLORIDA

- — The Associated Press

FLA.» Florida GAINESVILLE, defensive end Jordan Sherit had season-ending hip surgery, the latest setback for coach Jim McElwain’s team.

Sherit injured his hip in the second half of a home loss to Texas A&M last Saturday and was eventually carted off the field.

A fifth-year senior from Tampa, Fla., Sherit ranks sixth on the team with 23 tackles and second with 2½ sacks.

It’s unclear how long Sherit will need to recover, but McElwain says “it’s a bad deal.”

The Gators (3-3, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) also expect to be without safety Nick Washington (shoulder) and defensive back Quincy Lenton (knee) when they play third-ranked Georgia (7-0, 4-0) in nearby Jacksonville next week.

McElwain says receiver Tyrie Cleveland, left tackle Martez Ivey, receiver Kadarius Toney, safety Chauncey Gardner and defensive end Jabari Zuniga are “very limited” in practice this week.

Big 12 matchup has oldest, youngest coaches.

NORMAN,

Bill Snyder coached his first game for Kansas State in 1989.

At the time, Lincoln Riley had just turned 6.

Now, they will match wits.

Kansas State’s Snyder is, at 78, the oldest coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Riley, Oklahoma’s 34-year-old prodigy, is the youngest. Their teams will face off Saturday when the ninthranked Sooners travel to Manhattan to face the Wildcats.

Snyder has been a head coach for 26 years and has a career record of 205-108-1. In the months following his sudden offseason promotion to head coach, he has gained even more respect for Snyder’s body of work.

With injuries, ACC wide open.

Clemson has fallen, and Miami is on the rise.

Upsets, last-minute victories and injuries have made it a free-forall race for the Atlantic Coast Conference crown, and there are some unexpected contenders in the mix.

No. 7 Clemson, the defending national champion, is still the highest-ranked team in the conference, but the Tigers’ loss at Syracuse last Friday night put No. 16 North Carolina State in the driver’s seat to win the Atlantic Division. The Wolfpack, enjoying its highest ranking since 2003, have this weekend off, but faces No. 13 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, next weekend and hopes to still be on top when Clemson visits on Nov. 4.
