100 ANIMALS SEIZED IN CRUELTY PROBE

DURANGO» Officials in southwest Colorado say they have seized more than 100 animals after an investigat­ion of animal cruelty.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and the La Plata County Humane Society haven’t identified the person cited for animal cruelty.

The Cortez Journal reports that the humane society seized dogs, a cat, pigs, goats, sheep, horses, chickens, cattle and a burro and a duck from the property this week.

Humane society officials didn’t immediatel­y say what will happen to the animals. La Plata County spokeswoma­n Megan Graham says the animals are being cared for but would not provide details.

Suspect in Boulder robbery caught in Iowa. The Aurora Police Department reported Saturday afternoon the arrest of a suspect in the robbery of a woman at the North Boulder Recreation Center on Nov. 6.

Aurora police announced on Twitter that Blake Newton, 23, was arrested in Iowa.

Boulder police identified Newton as the man suspected of robbing and assaulting a woman who was walking toward her car after using the recreation center located at 3170 Broadway.

Newton is a suspect of multiple crimes in the Denver metro area, and Boulder police had been working with Denver and Aurora police fugitive units as well as the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force.

13-year-old sentenced in death.

SPRINGS» A 13-year-old boy

COLORADO has been sentenced to 6½ years in a youth detention facility for his role in the shooting death of a Colorado Springs liquor store owner.

The Gazette reports the boy, whose name has not been released, was sentenced Thursday on charges of aggravated robbery and felony murder.

Prosecutor­s say 19-year-old Phinehas Daniels shot the 68-year-old store owner, Donat Herr, during the Feb. 15 robbery. Herr used pepper spray against Daniels and two accomplice­s, who were carrying pellet guns. Investigat­ors say the 13-yearold boy told them Daniels found a gun inside the cab of a pickup he had broken into a day earlier in a motel parking lot while preparing for a different robbery.

Independen­ce Pass closes for season. ASPEN» Crews have closed Independen­ce Pass near Aspen for the winter season. The Colorado Department of Transporta­tion, which shut the Aspen and Twin Lakes gates Friday morning, says drivers can get to Aspen this winter on Colorado 82 from Glenwood Springs.
