Blomberg signs with Colorado
The Rapids on Tuesday announced their first offseason signing as attacking midfielder Johan Blomberg agreed to terms for the 2018 season.
Blomberg comes to the Rapids from AIK Fotboll of the Swedish first division. The 30-year-old from Lund, Sweden, will require an international roster spot for 2018.
“We have had an eye on Johan for quite some time, and he is someone who we believe will add an extra creative dimension to our team,” Rapids sporting director and interim general manager Pádraig Smith said in a news release. “Johan fits into the way we want to play, and we’re confident he will improve our team — especially on the attacking side. He is a versatile, forward-thinking player who possesses the creativity and game intelligence to make an impact in this league.” The 5-foot-10, 143-pound midfielder has spent his entire career in Sweden, where he scored 28 goals and added 39 assists. Last season, he scored three goals and added six assists in 28 league appearances. He also appeared in five Europa League qualifiers.
During his three-year stint with AIK Fotboll (2015-17), Blomberg scored 10 goals and added 22 assists in 108 games across all competitions.
“I chose the Colorado Rapids because I believe in the team’s vision for the future, the way they want to play the game, and because the move offers new challenges both on and off the pitch,” Blomberg said in a news release. “My family and I are very excited, and we can’t wait to move to Denver and officially begin this new chapter of our lives.”
