ARKANSAS FIRES BIELEMA MOMENTS AFTER LATEST LOSS

-

ARK.» Arkansas fired FAYETTEVILLE, football coach Bret Bielema after five disappointing seasons, moments after a season-ending 48-45 loss to Missouri on Friday.

The loss left Arkansas with a 4-8 record, capping only the second losing season of Bielema’s 12-year career. It also left him with a 29-34 record in his five seasons with the Razorbacks, including 11-29 in the SEC.

It was a shockingly poor performance from a coach who led Wisconsin to three Rose Bowl appearances before being hired at Arkansas from Wisconsin after the 2012 season.

Arkansas interim athletic director Julie Cromer Peoples informed Bielema of his firing before the coach held his postgame news conference. She is serving in an interim role after longtime athletic director Jeff Long was fired two weeks ago.

• Florida officials are scheduled to meet with second-year Central Florida coach Scott Frost’s representatives in Orlando, Fla., this weekend, as the Gators prepare to move on in case former Oregon coach Chip Kelly chooses the open UCLA job.

• TCU coach Gary Patterson, the winningest coach in Horned Frogs history, is staying in Fort Worth.

The deal is, in general, a two-year extension through the 2023 season.

• Authorities arrested Iowa State cornerback Brian Peavy and charged him with criminal mischief and interference. Peavy and another male were spray painting underneath a bridge. The other man escaped.

Cutler ruled out with concussion.

FLA.» Miami Dolphins starting DAVIE, quarterback Jay Cutler has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots because of a concussion, coach Adam Gase said.

Cutler remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol after a hit he took last weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

• Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman also remains in the concussion protocol, and he will not play against the Bucs on Sunday.

• Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster won’t play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers because of a hamstring injury.

• A potentially season-ending ACL injury was ruled out for Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Mike Williams. Doctors will do more tests on his right knee.

• The Carolina Panthers reinstated Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen to their 53-man roster so he can play in Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Virtual betting becomes reality.

N.J.» The company behind ATLANTIC CITY, internet gambling website PlaySugarHouse.com became the first in the U.S. to let gamblers bet real money online on the outcome of virtual sports events.

Chicago-based Rush Street Interactive received approval from New Jersey regulators to let patrons bet online on the outcome of virtual computer-generated sporting “events,” including soccer, horse, dog and vehicle racing.

The technology exists in some Nevada casinos and is widely used throughout Europe, but this is the first time it will be available over the internet in the U.S.
