Elway: Coaches will finish season

- By Nicki Jhabvala

Vance Joseph isn’t going anywhere yet.

Broncos general manager and president of football operations John Elway said definitively Tuesday that he will not make any coaching changes during his team’s final four weeks of the season.

“We’re going to finish the season out and, you know, obviously we know the expectations of the Denver Broncos,” Elway said on Orange and Blue 760. “And this has been a tough year. It’s not what the Broncos are about. I’m embarrassed about it — the fact that this has happened — and will do my part to hopefully get this thing turned around next year, and the expectations of Broncos fans should be for us to get this turned around. That is fair. But before we get that done, we’re going to take pride in what we do and finish this season as strong as we possibly can.”

As the Broncos slog through the remainder of the season, they are simultaneously looking ahead to 2018 and hoping to end 2017 on a decent note.

“I’d like to get us competitive. With the way that we’ve turned the ball over and we’ve been out of football games, and that’s the most disappointing thing,” Elway said. “Losing obviously is one thing, but I think the way that we’ve lost has been the most frustrating thing. The expectations for us, whether we win or lose, is to get out there and compete and continue to get better about how we respond to mistakes that we make and stay competitive for 60 minutes. For us to lose eight in a row, and I think we’ve lost six of those eight by more than 10 points — that’s not competitive football and we’ve got enough good football players on this team that that should not be happening.”

Wolfe placed on IR.

The Broncos placed starting defensive end Derek Wolfe on injured reserve because of a neck injury that caused numbness on the right side of his body.

Wolfe’s injury will not require surgery, he told 9News, but he will need at least a couple months of rest to recover.

Wolfe was carted off the field during the Broncos’ loss at Oakland in Week 12 and ruled out for the team’s subsequent defeat at Miami as he underwent further evaluation.

Wolfe played through multiple injuries (hand, foot, neck) this season to start 11 games and record 31 total tackles (18 solo), two sacks for a loss of 13 yards, six quarterback hits and 3.5 run stuffs.

Footnote.

The Broncos released offensive lineman Gabe Ikard from the practice squad and added Jeremiah Poutasi in his spot.
