Wynne joins Rapids in trade with Vancouver
For the second time this month, the Rapids have acquired a New Zealand international wing back.
The club announced Thursday it added Deklan Wynne from the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for $100,000 in targeted allocation money.
The 22-year-old Wynne reunites with his former national team coach, Anthony Hudson, who last month took over as the Rapids’ head coach.
“Top-level, left-sided players can be tough to find,” Rapids sporting director and interim general manager Padraig Smith said in a news release. “But in Deklan, we believe we’ve found someone who has the technical gifts and the aggression to be a long-term solution for us.”
Earlier this month, the Rapids acquired New Zealand international wing back Kip Colvey in the waiver draft.
Wynne was born in South Africa but raised in New Zealand. He would require an international roster spot, but Rapids spokesman Ryan Madden said Wynne is expected to go out on loan for at least the first part of the season.
Last season, the speedy, left-footed defender scored two goals in 20 games with the Whitecaps FC 2 in the second-division United Soccer League.
The 5-foot-10, 162-pound wing back has 15 caps with the All Whites, including two starts in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. He also appeared in both games against Peru last month in a playoff for the final World Cup spot.
