DUCHENE NETS SECOND GOAL FOR OT WINNER

ONTARIO» Matt OTTAWA, Duchene scored his second goal of the game seven seconds into overtime and the Senators capped a four-goal comeback with a 6-5 win over the Sharks on Friday night.

Down 5-2 to start the third period, the Senators got goals from Derick Brassard, Duchene and Mike Hoffman. Ryan Dzingel and Mark Stone also scored for Ottawa, and Craig Anderson made 30 saves.

Hoffman and Duchene raced for a 2-on-1 off the OT faceoff, and Hoffman slipped a backhand pass across the slot to Duchene, who pushed the puck past goalie Aaron Dell.

FRIDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

Reilly Smith had a goal and two assists, and the Golden Knights topped the Blackhawks 5-4 for their ninth win in 10 games. … Anthony Mantha and Gustav Nyquist scored in the third period to lift the Red Wings to their fourth straight victory, 4-2 over the Panthers. The Red Wings blew a 2-0 lead, but Mantha gave Detroit the lead back on the power play. … Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists, Tristan Jarry stopped 31 shots for his second shutout of the season and the Penguins beat the Islanders 4-0. Daniel Sprong had two goals and an assist, Evgeni Malkin also scored and Dominik Simon added two assists for the Penguins. … Blake Wheeler and Jacob Trouba each had a goal and an assist as the Jets extended their point streak to five games with a 4-3 win over the Sabres.

FOOTNOTE Legendary Hood dies.

Bruce Hood, the former NHL referee who worked 1,100 games over 21 seasons, died Friday of prostate cancer. He was 81. Kevin Hood said his father died at a hospice surrounded by family in Guelph, Ontario. Bruce Hood was on the ice for some of the NHL’s most iconic moments, including Bobby Orr’s overtime goal in Game 4 of the 1970 Stanley Cup final that gave the Bruins their first title in nearly 30 years.
