“LADY BIRD” BEST FILM, SAY CRITICS

Society of Film Critics has named “Lady Bird” the best picture of 2017.

The writer-director of “Lady Bird,” Greta Gerwig, won best director and best screenplay as the society voted in New York on Saturday.

Sally Hawkins won best actress for “The Shape of Water” and “Maudie,” and Daniel Kaluuya won best actor for “Get Out.”

The best supporting actress award went to Laurie Metcalf for “Lady Bird,” and the best supporting actor award went to Willem Dafoe for “The Florida Project.”

“Blade Runner 2049” won best cinematogr­aphy.

Man with machete attacks Meals on Wheels.

VT.» Police say a man in Vermont has used a machete to attack a woman in her 70s as she delivered meals to a motel being used as emergency housing for the homeless.

WCAX-TV reports 32year-old Burlington resident Abukar Ibrahim is accused of attacking the 73-year-old Meals on Wheels volunteer who was dropping off meals at Harbor Place, which serves as a temporary emergency housing facility. The attack happened Friday in Shelburne.

The woman was sent to a hospital with multiple injuries and later released.

Police say Ibrahim barricaded himself in a room for 2½ hours after the attack before coming out. He was being held at the Chittenden Regional Correction­al Facility.

Stuntman’s kin suing “Walking Dead.”

The family of a stuntman who fell to his death on the set of “The Walking Dead” in Georgia is moving forward with a lawsuit against the show’s production company.

Attorney Jeff Harris says in a statement Saturday that they’ll proceed with civil litigation now that the Occupation­al Safety and Health Administra­tion has cited Stalwart Films for what it says are serious violations and proposed the maximum allowable fine in the death of 33-year-old John Bernecker last July.

Blaze kills firefighte­r, resident. PHILADELPH­IA» A veteran firefighte­r was fatally injured Saturday when a burning row home collapsed in Philadelph­ia and he became pinned under the debris, authoritie­s said. A person who lived in the home was also killed.

Lt. Matthew Letourneau, 42, was pulled from the home by fellow firefighte­rs and taken to Temple University hospital. The 11-year veteran was pronounced dead there a short time later.the cause of the blaze remains under investigat­ion.
