PEACOCKS VISIT NEIGHBORHOOD IN BOULDER

-

BOULDER» Tamara Star opened her door in south Boulder on the second day of the new year and found herself face to face with what she is taking as an auspicious omen for 2018. Two of them, in fact. There, just outside her home on Shanahan Ridge, were a peacock and peahen, in all their iridescent splendor.

Another neighbor, Stephen Jones, past president of the Boulder County Audubon Society, also has enjoyed their surprise presence.

“It was really just amazing to see them here in the dead of winter,” Jones said. “To see these exotic birds right on our porches … I think they’re coming on my porch because we put quite a bit of salt down for ice.”

After posting about the birds on Facebook, Star established contact with the owners of Shanahan Ranch, directly south of Shanahan Ridge, and a ranch owner told Star she is going to come to corral the birds, which may have gone astray in recent high winds.

Five-day closure of Indiana Street between Superior and Arvada to begin Jan. 8.

JEFFERSON COUNTY»

Frustration will greet thousands of motorists who rely on Indiana Street to make their daily commute between Boulder County and Arvada as crews plan a shutdown of the heavily used road for an entire work week starting Monday.

The Jefferson County Transportation Department will close the roughly 3-mile stretch of Indiana between West 96th Avenue and Colorado 128 to repair a large culvert. The road, which sees 17,000 vehicles a day just south of the planned work zone, will remain closed through Jan. 12.

The county says crews will work around the clock to keep the closure as short as possible.

A suggested detour from the county identifies a combination of West 96th Avenue, West 100th Avenue, Simms Street and Colorado 128.

Boulder pursues legal action against fossil fuelemitting corporations.

BOULDER» The city is moving ahead in a partnership with a Washington, D.C.-based law firm and other communities in Colorado on the pursuit of legal action against a yetto-be-determined group of large fossil fuels producers with a presence in Colorado and a history as significant greenhouse gas emitters.

The basis for this case is that local governments have had to spend money to address climate change issues that are partially consequences of emissions by fossil fuel-producing corporations.

Regional Sustainability Coordinator Jonathan Koehn said that while Boulder and others would be seeking compensation, the case also would aim to help mainstream the argument that companies should be liable for harm to the climate.

Man shot after waking up in his truck as it was being stolen.

GREELEY» A man was shot early Saturday morning after waking up in the back cab of his truck to find his vehicle was being stolen and driven down the street.

The man underwent surgery Saturday, Greeley Police Sgt. Mike Heck said.

After waking up, the victim confronted the suspects inside the vehicle. During a fight that ensued, the driver of the stolen truck slowly impacted a parked vehicle on 18th Avenue.

The suspects and the victim got out of the truck and began fighting, Heck said. A neighbor heard yelling and came out thinking one of the suspects had a firearm.

“He did not know who was who at that time,”
