AVS’ BERNIER NAMED SECOND STAR OF WEEK

-

Avalanche goaltender Jonathan Bernier was named the NHL’s second star of the week Monday after leading Colorado to a 3-0-0 record.

Bernier compiled a 1.60 goalsagainst average with a .957 save percentage in wins over Winnipeg, Columbus and Minnesota. Against the Blue Jackets, he recorded 34 saves to earn his 16th career shutout.

On the season, the 29-year-old Bernier has a 9-7-1 record, a 2.88 GAA and a .909 save percentage.

The Avs last played Saturday in a 7-2 win over the Wild. Their next game will be on Saturday at Dallas against the Stars.

Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins was the first star of the week after scoring five goals, and the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby earned third star with eight points in the week.

• Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman David Savard was fined $5,000 by the NHL for slashing Florida Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck in the third period of Sunday’s game in Ohio.

Video showed Savard coming down hard with his stick on Trocheck’s hands in back of the Blue Jackets’ goal cage. Trocheck recoiled in pain while teammate Connor Brickley shoved Savard. No penalty was called at the time.

• The Chicago Blackhawks placed veteran defenseman Cody Franson on waivers.

Franson had played in the four previous games after missing seven with an upper-body injury.

The ninth-year player from Surrey, British Columbia, signed a one-year, $1 million contract with Chicago just before the start of the season in October. He has one goal and seven points in 23 games.

• The Carolina Hurricanes activated forward Lee Stempniak from injured reserve.
