Actor Dwayne Johnson, best known as “The Rock,” wished Douglas County sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Pelle a quick recovery after he was sent home from a hospital.

Pelle, 32, was one of four law enforcement officers wounded on New Year’s Eve while responding to a domestic disturbance call at a Highlands Ranch apartment complex. Deputy Zackari Parrish was killed in the attack, and two neighbors also were wounded.

Gunman Matthew Riehl was killed by police.

Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle told the Daily Camera a bullet missed his son’s heart “by an inch.” After more than two weeks in intensive care, Pelle headed home to recover Friday. Boulder County sheriff’s Cmdr. Mike Wagner said Tuesday Pelle was improving, despite some fever and infection.

“I just want to say I want to wish you well in your recovery. I’ve been tracking your story,” Johnson said. “I am so fortunate and grateful that I’m able to send you this video and that you’re around.”

Pelle shared Johnson’s message through his Twitter account Wednesday.

“Thank you @TheRock you made my day! I am a giant fan and want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this!!” Pelle tweeted.

Johnson also shared a quote to encourage Pelle to stay strong during recovery: “I heard this years ago when I completely tore up my Achilles and I shut down for a little while, but it was something like, ‘setbacks are just a setup for an even bigger comeback.’ ”
