Over and Under
One big show, one smaller
On any given night, you can find an electronic music symposium going down on stage somewhere in Denver. One subgenre has pieced together a home base in the city: electro-soul. The genre’s rhythm-forward mash-up of sampled songs and live instrumentation was born when Pretty Lights’ Derek Vincent Smith synthesized hip-hop with live electronic music. At the Fillmore Auditorium on Jan. 26, Michal Menert, Pretty Lights’ other founding member, is heading the latest Re: Creation, a lineup of some of the area’s top and up-and-coming artists in the genre. He’ll be joined by Late Night Radio, Eliot Lipp, Dynohunter, Unlimited Gravity and members of the Disco Biscuits and Break Science. Tickets: $19.75-$29 via livenation.com. Ice glazes the streets and the dry chill makes your teeth hurt when you smile — if you go outside at all. It’s winter in Denver, finally. But at the Gothic Theatre on Jan. 31, indie upstarts Hippo Campus and Sure Sure will blow a warm wind through Englewood. Both bands have a sobright-you’ll-squint sound: St. Paul’s Hippo Campus is a Sure cousin Sure in sound is a touch to Vampire closer to Weekend the soaring while pop Los anthems Angeles’ Matt and Kim are known to peddle. Together, the bill is a onetwo punch of major chord joy, good for a shout-along or a good bet for a little-known concert that won’t leave you out in the cold. Tickets to the show are $18-$20 and are available via axs.com.
