POST OFFICE WARNS ABOUT “FISHING” TRY

-

A suspicious device discovered near East 4th Avenue and Sherman Street Friday afternoon turned out to be a mail “fishing” device used to steal outgoing mail.

The device was recovered from a blue collection box, according to the U.S. Postal Service Inspection Service, which issued a series of tweets about the incident.

“Denver Postal Inspectors are working several leads on the suspects responsible for this recent activity,” one of the tweets read. “We are looking for this late model black Kia Sportage with CO plate 095ZKX.”

Officials urged people to call 911 if they see the vehicle stealing mail — before calling the U.S. Postal Service Inspection Service at 877-876-2455.

Until the suspect or suspects are caught, investigators suggested residents drop off their outgoing mail inside post offices “until we have shut this suspect down,” according to one of the tweets.

“If you’ve sent mail from a blue collection box recently, check with the sender to be sure they received it.”

Shyrock gets one year in prison.

ARVADA

» Adam Shyrock, the 37-year-old behind the fake charity Boobies Rock! Inc., was sentenced to a year in prison Thursday for willful failure to file a tax return.

The Castle Rock resident pocketed more than $1.8 million from Boobies Rock merchandise, which consisted of T-shirts, hoodies, koozies and bracelets, while sending little of customers’ money to legitimate breast cancer groups.

Shryock used the funds to support his lifestyle, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney for the District of Colorado. That included buying himself a BMW, subscribing to an online dating service and paying bar tabs and a maid service.

Between Boobies Rock and other businesses from 2011 and 2012, Shryock earned more than $2.4 million in income. That — as well as income not reported in 2010 while residing in California — has led to Shryock owing $430,970 to the IRS, according to the statement.

Shryock pleaded guilty April 4. After a year in prison, he has another year of supervised release.
