VIKINGS HIRE EAGLES’ DEFILIPPO FOR OFFENSE

-

MINNEAPOLIS» John DeFilippo stood on top of a double-decker bus with the rest of the Eagles, as they cruised through raucous downtown Philadelphia on Thursday to celebrate the franchise’s first championship in 57 years.

Hours later, the Minnesota Vikings handed him the keys to their offense.

DeFilippo has had quite the ride in two seasons as quarterbacks coach for the Eagles.

“How many guys can say they participated in a Super Bowl parade in the morning and became one of 32 play-callers in the National Football League that night? That’s a pretty good deal,” DeFilippo said. “It was a whirlwind, but it was a whirlwind that was 100 percent worth it, professionally and personally.”

The Vikings finalized their hire of DeFilippo as offensive coordinator on Friday, following Pat Shurmur’s departure to become head coach of the New York Giants. The 39-yearold DeFilippo is the third offensive coordinator Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer has had in five seasons on the job.

Iowa State QB gets a sixth season.

Iowa State announced quarterback Kyle Kempt has been granted a sixth season of eligibility by the NCAA.

The Cyclones said the governing body granted Kempt an extension of eligibility after considering the totality of the circumstances surrounding his transfer from Oregon State and Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College.

Kempt became an unlikely starter for the Cyclones midway through last season after Jacob Park left the team. Kempt started off his career with a 38-31 win at then-No. 3 Oklahoma and finished with a 66.3 percent completion rate, the best in school history.

Kempt began his career at Oregon State in 2013, redshirting his first season. After a coaching change, Kempt transferred to Hutchinson Community College in 2015 and joined the Cyclones as a walk-on a year later.

Kempt will return to spring practice on scholarship and as the team’s starting quarterback, with sophomore Zeb Noland and freshman Devon Moore backing him up.

Davie appealing suspension.

New Mexico football coach Bob Davie said he will appeal a 30day suspension in connection with multiple investigations involving misconduct.

In a statement released by the school, Davie said none of the three investigations conducted over a ninemonth period found he violated any school policy.

“I fully cooperated in every respect and met multiple times with the investigators, but was never asked to meet with or provide information” to a Chicago-based law firm conducting one of the probes, Davie said.

Davie said investigators from that firm, Hogan Marren Babbo & Rose, never asked him about one allegation in which he was accused of asking his players to “get some dirt” on a victim of sexual assault. “So there is no misunderstanding, never did I make that or any similar comment,” Davie said.

The school announced Thursday it was suspending Davie without pay for 30 days.
