Russians’ election meddling and President Trump’s response

- Re: Dan Danbom, James L. Turner, Russell W. Haas, Kathy Taylor, Re: Chuck Lawson, Sam Walker,

“13 Russians indicted in probe,” Feb. 17 news story.

It’s abundantly clear that the Russians wanted Donald Trump to be president. Why? To lift sanctions? To fray alliances? To alienate whole groups of people based on race or religion? To destroy American prestige worldwide? Whatever the reasons, it’s safe to say it wasn’t to make America great again. So far, the Russians have succeeded spectacularly.

With the indictments issued last week, it is now impossible for the president and his party to continue to claim Russia did not influence the 2016 elections. When will the GOP act to safeguard future elections? Their response to this point implies they condone a foreign power attacking our country, our democracy and our people.

Is there anything more pathetic than special counsel Robert Mueller’s last-gasp attempt to grab headlines by indicting 13 Russians in-absentia, when there will be no chance of a show trial? What actions purporting election influencing will next come into Mueller’s sights? Perhaps letters to the editor? Isn’t it time to terminate Mueller’s vain, fruitless and costly vendetta against President Donald Trump?

Faced with “incontrovertible” evidence of foreign penetration of our news sources and election processes — with the avowed intent to sow discord and polarize the American public and to undermine our faith in our institutions — wouldn’t you think the commander in chief would be mobilized to defend our nation?

A serious, looming threat deserves a call to action to prevent more damage, not just a mewling, self-serving protest: “There was no collusion!”

Am I the only one who, after considering the latest from Robert Mueller, sees very little difference between this so-called indictable activity and the daily anti-Trump bias displayed by The New York Times, CNN and others in the national media? We are continually told that social media is different than “mainstream” media, but I see very little difference.

“Russia again targets voting,” Feb. 14 news story.

The nation’s top intelligence officials confirmed to the Senate Tuesday that Russia interfered in the 2016 election and seeks to do so again this fall. Worse than doing nothing to protect our democratic principles and prevent future attacks on our political sovereignty, President Donald Trump has declined to impose new sanctions on Russia — overwhelmingly mandated by Congress — for its past election meddling.

And yet the president calls those who didn’t stand and applaud his State of the Union speech “treasonous.” What’s wrong with this picture? Your move, Congress.
