AUSTRALIA ORDERS RECALL OF AIR BAGS

Australia on Wednesday issued a compulsory recall for all 2.7 million cars fitted with defective Takata air bags in an effort to lift the auto industry’s mixed efforts to fix the fault blamed for at least 23 deaths around the world.

Vehicle suppliers must recall and replace all the air bags in Australia by the end of 2020, with priority given to the most dangerous because of their design, age or the level of humidity in their environmen­t, Assistant Minister to the Treasurer Michael Sukkar said.

Amazon is expanding its home-security business by buying Ring, which makes Wi-Fi-connected cameras and doorbells.

The deal comes months after the online retailer started selling its own Wi-Fi-connected indoor security cameras, which work with its voice-assistant Alexa. The Ring acquisitio­n helps Amazon better compete with Google’s Nest, which also makes cameras and doorbells.

FedEx and UPS spar over NRA support.

The two biggest U.S. couriers are at pains to point out the other’s close relationsh­ip with the National Rifle Associatio­n.

FedEx Corp. on Tuesday trumpeted that the gunrights group uses United Parcel Service Inc. for shipments from the online NRA store. “And not FedEx,” the company said by email, underlinin­g the last two words of the sentence.

UPS responded quickly. Yes, it has a shipping deal with the NRA, it said. But it doesn’t offer special services for the group’s members. FedEx does.

Ford to test self-driving vehicles in Miami-Dade County.

DETROIT» Ford Motor Co. is making Miami-Dade County its new test bed for self-driving vehicles. The automaker and its partners — Domino’s Pizza, ride-hailing company Lyft and delivery company Postmates — are starting pilot programs to see how consumers react to autonomous and semiautono­mous vehicles.

Macy’s reported a healthy sales gain at existing stores for the holiday period as it benefited from an improving economy and its own initiative­s, including an overhauled customer loyalty program. The department store chain also reported fourth-quarter earnings that nearly tripled from a year earlier, boosted by the sale of some real estate assets. It also issued an upbeat outlook.
