HIKER FINDS HUMAN SKULL ON TRAIL NEAR PIKES PEAK

SPRINGS» A hiker COLORADO found a human skull Friday on a trail near Pikes Peak, not far from the spot where a Colorado Springs woman was last seen.

KOAA-TV reports the skull was found near the Catamount Trail in Teller County west of Colorado Springs. Crews conducted a search at the site Saturday.

The station reports Micah Lambert was last seen in that area in mid-September.

The remains have been turned over to the Teller County coroner.

Sheriff’s commander Greg Couch said the remains could be identified this week.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigat­ion is assisting the sheriff’s department.

Police standoff ends after man tries to set house on fire.

GREELEY» A police standoff at a house in Greeley ended Saturday night after a man attempted to start a fire. He walked out 20 minutes later with smoke inhalation and burns.

The Greeley Police Department discovered that Anthony Alfonso Griego, 45, was at a house on 27th Street near Eighth Avenue. Police had an affidavit for his arrest in relation to kidnapping and sexual-assault charges.

They surveilled the house and confirmed he was there by 7 p.m., police say. Authoritie­s made announceme­nts to the house, and the resident, a relative of Griego’s, came out. He told authoritie­s that Griego was tampering with the stove and gas line, potentiall­y trying to cause an explosion or fire. Shortly after, smoke started coming from the house.

Griego was transporte­d to North Colorado Medical Center, police say. Firefighte­rs found evidence of attempted arson. He has four active arrest warrants. Additional charges of arson and criminal mischief were added.

Griego has a criminal history that dates to 1991, according to arrest records from the Colorado Bureau of Investigat­ion. He previously has been found guilty of assault and domestic violence.

23,000-acre fire in northern New Mexico moves into Colorado.

A 23,253acre fire burning in northern New Mexico crossed into southeast Colorado early Saturday, burning 9,160 acres of Las Animas and Baca counties.

The Stateline Fire, which is burning in three states, started Thursday morning on private property in New Mexico, according to New Mexico State Forestry. The cause of the blaze is under investigat­ion.

No immediate threats to structures were reported Sunday, according to the forestry department.

More than 80 firefighte­rs from multiple agencies were working against the blaze, which is being fueled by piñon, juniper, oak and grass, according to the New Mexico forestry department. The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control sent a firefighti­ng aircraft and multiple engines.

Ten acres were burning in Oklahoma.

Woman, 40, sentenced to 20 years in prison for southwest Denver vehicular homicide DUI.

Ernestina Rosendo-Ponce, 40, was sentenced for the Jan. 29, 2017, death of 37-yearold Shuvonne Wickard, according to the Denver district attorney’s office.

The two-vehicle crash happened at the intersecti­on of South Federal Boulevard and West Kentucky Avenue.

Wickard was a passenger in the vehicle that Rosendo-Ponce hit. The driver was seriously injured in the crash.

According to a probableca­use statement, an officer saw Rosendo-Ponce apparently trying to flee the scene of the crash. First responders noted that her eyes were bloodshot and watery and that her breath smelled of alcohol, police say. — Staff and wire reports
