CORONER ARRESTED FOR DUI AT CRASH

Bent County Coroner Dave Roberts resigned Friday after being arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence when he showed up to a fatal crash northeast of Las Animas the night before.

A 16-year-old boy was was driving a 1996 Ford pickup with three friends in the vehicle around 9:30 p.m. Thursday when he lost control of the vehicle northeast of Las Animas, according to a news release from the State Patrol. None of the people in the truck was wearing a seatbelt. Danielle Gonzales, 19, of Las Animas, was killed in the crash.

When the coroner arrived on the scene, troopers began to suspect that he was drunk, State Patrol spokesman Trooper Joshua Lewis said Monday.

Roberts was arrested on suspicion of DUI. — Danika
