Rosen only QB worthy of top-5 pick

-

Banking on a Bruin. I really think this quarterback class is overhyped. Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield are all a crap shoot. One of them might be NFL gold, but my guess is Josh Rosen is the only one worthy of a top-five pick in the draft. Darrell, New York

Kiz: The hype machine is on full blast, and it’s blaring loudest for Allen. I love Laramie and the ’Pokes. They’re good people. So is Allen. But didn’t the Broncos bring back Gary Kubiak to make certain John Elway doesn’t draft another QB because he’s big, strong and bears physical resemblance to Elway?

Sooner or later. Mayfield would be a horrible choice for the Broncos. I would probably become a Raiders fan if the Broncos select him. Steve, Denver

Kiz: Unless you get goose bumps when the band cranks up the Oklahoma fight song, it’s hard to fathom how anyone sees Drew Brees or Russell Wilson in Mayfield. But I get why people like him. He reminds me a little of Jake Plummer, who led Denver to the AFC championship game before Mike Shanahan’s ill-fated romance with Jay Cutler.

Food for thought. Kiz, you’re going to eat a huge pile of crow in two or three years regarding Mayfield. David, good in the kitchen

Kiz: Well, I did sit down to a meal of crow after declaring Dak Prescott would never be a star for Dallas. We all make mistakes. But serve crow with a nice bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape, and after the second glass of wine, it tastes as yummy as Thanksgiving turkey.

Case closed. As a 5-11 team, the No. 5 pick needs to have an impact on the Broncos this year. If you draft a quarterback at No. 5, play him. This draft-andstash philosophy does not seem to work for Denver. See: Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch.

Kiz: If Elway drafts a quarterback at No. 5, the peeps in Broncos Country are going to shout long and hard until the rookie plays. Case Keenum might as well turn in his uniform and move into an abandoned miner’s cabin in St. Elmo.

Numerous needs. Trading out of No. 5 is a better option for the Broncos. Get an offensive lineman, or maybe a player who slides down the board. The Broncos have at least six needs to address and could hold a trade partner hostage if Darnold, Rosen and Allen go 1-2-3.

Gonzo, horse trader

Kiz: Hey, don’t you realize it’s against Colorado law to talk common sense during the weeks prior to the NFL draft? My thought is Elway will get a great player at No. 5 if he just watches everybody panic to grab a quarterback. But trading back a few slots for Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith or Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward may land the Broncos a Pro Bowler.

Common cents. And today’s parting shot took exception to my economic theory that it’s hard for the Broncos to build a championship team while paying a quarterback’s salary to an NFL linebacker:

The only “Von Miller problem” exists for teams that don’t wear orange and blue.
