YANKEES’ HICKS PLACED ON DL

- — The Associated Press

» The New York Yankees TORONTO put Aaron Hicks on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right ribcage in the latest injury to one of their outfielders.

The Yankees made the move Friday, a day after Hicks got two hits in a season-opening 6-1 win at Toronto. Hicks played the whole game, and it wasn’t clear how he got hurt. He hustled to beat out an infield hit in the eighth inning.

New York already was missing Jacoby Ellsbury, who’s out with an oblique injury, and Clint Frazier, who’s recovering from a concussion.

Hicks was limited to 88 games last season because of injuries to his core. He hit .266 with 15 home runs and 52 RBIs while primarily playing center field.

Braves’ Flowers out for awhile.

» The Braves put catcher ATANTA

Tyler Flowers on the 10-day DL with a strained left oblique and prepared to be without him for a few weeks.

Flowers sustained the injury on a swing in his first at-bat of the season in Atlanta’s 8-5 win over Philadelphia on Thursday. He could not complete the at-bat and headed straight to the clubhouse.

Manager Brian Snitker said Friday that Flowers felt a pop. Snitker said the strain was diagnosed as being of mid-level severity.

Tulo’s needs double surgery. TORONTO» Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will have surgery Monday to remove bone spurs from both heels and is expected to miss eight weeks, general manager Ross Atkins said.

The bone spurs have bothered Tulowitzki during his recovery from surgery to repair the ligament damage suffered when he stepped on C.J. Cron’s foot while trying to beat out an infield hit in a game last July against the Los Angeles Angels. The five-time all-star has not played since.

The spur on Tulowitzki’s right heel was a minor irritant at the beginning of spring training, and he hoped to be able to play through it. The decision to undergo surgery came after pain also developed in his left heel.

Including this latest absence, Tulowitzki will have missed at least 30 games in seven consecutive seasons.

Neshek out with hurt shoulder.

ATLANTA» The Phillies put righthander Pat Neshek on the 10-day DL with a right shoulder strain.

The move was made retroactive to Tuesday.

Neshek was an all-star in 2017 when he posted a 1.59 ERA in 71 combined games with Philadelphia and Colorado.

More players from Puerto Rico.

Major League Baseball started the season with its most players born in Puerto Rico since 2011.

Nineteen players on opening-day rosters were born on the island, an increase of three from last year, the commissioner’s office said Friday.

The overall percentage of players born outside the 50 states was 29 percent, down from last year’s record 29.8 percent figure.

Toronto infielder Gift Ngoepe is the first player from South Africa on an opening-day roster and Pittsburgh pitcher Dovydas Neverauskas is the first from Lithuania.

The Dominican Republic led with 84 players, down from 93 last year. Venezuela was next with 74.
