U.S. INTERCEPTS TWO RUSSIAN BOMBERS

ALASKA» Two Russian long-range bombers were intercepte­d off the coast of Alaska by a pair of F-22 Raptor fighter jets Friday, the military said. The Tu95 bombers were flying in the Air Defense Identifica­tion Zone in the Bering Sea north of the Aleutian Islands, where they were visually identified and shadowed by the U.S. jets at 10 a.m., said Navy Capt. Scott Miller, a North American Aerospace Defense Command spokesman. The bombers did not enter North American airspace, he said. Miller declined to say how close the bombers came to U.S. land.

Nigerian woman kicked off United flight after white man complained she was “pungent,” lawsuit says. An African woman and her children were kicked off a United Airlines flight after a fellow passenger complained that she had a “pungent” odor, according to a racial discrimina­tion lawsuit filed against the company.

The incident involving the passenger, a white male, happened two years ago, when Queen Obioma, a Nigerian citizen, and her two children were boarding a flight from Houston to San Francisco.

The family had flown from Lagos, Nigeria, and were on the second leg of a three-flight journey to Ontario.

Salmonella sickens dozens after recall of nearly 200 million eggs. A salmonella outbreak that led to a recall of nearly 207 million eggs has sickened nearly three dozen people along the East Coast.

Thirty-five people have been sickened by Salmonella braenderup, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week. The outbreak, which has been traced to a single egg producer, has resulted in 11 hospitaliz­ations. No deaths have been reported.

In April, Rose Acre Farms recalled its products after federal officials tied the illnesses to the company’s facility in North Carolina, the U.S. Food and Drug Administra­tion said. The recalled eggs were sold under brand names such as Great Value, Country Daybreak and Crystal Farms. They were also sold to Waffle House restaurant­s and Food Lion stores.

Eggs produced at the farm are distribute­d to retail stores and restaurant­s in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvan­ia, Virginia, West Virginia and the Carolinas.

VERSAILLES, stabbed and critically injured his 4-year-old son during a standoff with police that ended when officers stormed the home, authoritie­s said Saturday. North Versailles police initially had gone to the home just before 10 p.m. Friday when Syneca Ashley Sr., 28, and the child’s mother were involved in a nonviolent domestic dispute.

Montana river recedes, but floodwater­s likely to resurge.

The Clark Fork River near Missoula began to recede Saturday after cresting at its highest level in a century, but the floodwater­s are expected to surge again next week with no end in sight for the hundreds of homes threatened.

The river crested Friday night at 13.82 feet, its highest level since 1908. — Denver Post wire services
