It’s very simple. People need to stop disrespecting teachers, and to better fund education. Many teachers grade papers every night and on the weekends. They also do not get three months off every summer, because many are working, or taking classes for professional advancement or to renew their certification.

Teachers should not be forced to teach in aging mobile classrooms without any bathrooms, or have more than 30 students in their classrooms.

We also need more teachers aides, counselors and psychologists in the schools, not less. We do not need to spend millions of dollars on so many standardized tests, when they have little to do with future success.

For those who are interested in how things could improve, I recommend reading Ted Dintersmiths’s new book, “What School Could Be” (Princeton University Press, April 2018).

Re: “With teachers out this week, I ran some numbers,” April 29 Jon Caldara column.

I may have missed it, but in Jon Caldara’s column blasting teachers who want higher salaries, did Caldara provide us what his salary is and also how much it increased when his buddies voted to increase the deficit over $1 trillion?

It seems only fair that we should know how many hours he “works.” Is it close to a teacher’s salary, since we are putting education of our children in their hands?
