Injured star. Rockies await tests, further word on DJ LeMahieu’s sprained thumb.

SAN DIEGO» Rockies second baseman DJ LeMahieu was seeing a hand specialist here Tuesday for a second opinion on a sprained left thumb that landed him on the 10day disabled list Monday.

LeMahieu initially hurt the thumb during his third atbat against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, and since then the digit has been “sore, swollen and painful,” according to Rockies manager Bud Black.

“What we want to rule out is any sort of fracture or break,” Black said. “The degree of the sprain is concerning us. If it’s mild or a lowdegree sprain, we’re in good shape and he could be back when his time’s up in 10 days. If it’s more significant, or if it’s a bone involved, that’s when it’s more concerning.”

For now, all Colorado can do is play the waiting game until the extent of the injury is determined. Daniel Castro got a second consecutive start at second base on Tuesday in LeMahieu’s absence.

“We’re all trying to remain optimistic, but we’ll see what a couple more scans show today,” Black said. “He’s going to see the hand specialist, and truly we’ll know more in a couple days when all the reports are back, the doctors have consulted each other and we see how DJ’s feeling.”

As of Tuesday evening, LeMahieu — who noted postgame that “I haven’t even gotten there” in terms of gripping and swinging a bat — had yet to hear about the results of his hand scans.
