Adams County awards $5M in open-space grants

Adams County doled out more than $5 million in grants Tuesday to bolster the county’s green and open spaces.

The 17 grants will fund everything from playground renovation and land preservati­on to habitat restoratio­n and invasive tree removal, according to a press release.

The big-ticket item is a $1.6 million project in Arvada that includes the constructi­on of bike lanes, sidewalks and trails through the Tennyson corridor. Work will be on Tennyson from the Clear Creek Trail to W. 64th Avenue, and west on 64th Avenue to Wolff Street.

The smallest grant is $3,900 for a volunteer cleanup day at Barr Lake.

The open space grants, which are awarded twice a year, are funded by a sales tax voters approved in 1999.

Other grant recipients include:

• $913,031 — Big Dry Creek master plan and floodplain restoratio­n pilot project — Thornton

• $550,000 — Downtown Plaza Park, Phase I — Brighton

• $375,837 and $40,000 — Bennett Civic Center Park access road and parking lot improvemen­ts; and parks, trails and open space master plan update

• $362,503 — Ricardo Flores Magon Academy playground renovation

• $340,000 — Northwest Open Space renovation Northglenn

• $250,804 — Eagle Pointe Recreation Center aquatic enhancemen­ts — Commerce City

• $115,000 — Sand Creek Trail Connection — Commerce City.
