ADMINISTRATORS SUSPENDED AFTER FIGHT AT SCHOOL

-

Four administrators at a Denver charter school have been suspended after a playground fight captured on video showed the school’s restorative justice coordinator encouraging the students to throw punches.

Officials with Wyatt Academy said Friday the elementary school principal, assistant principal, school psychologist and the coordinator are on administrative leave.

Initially, three girls involved in the April 20 altercation were cited by police for public fighting. The citations were dismissed.

Denver police are investigating the coordinator, who eventually broke up the fight.

Although Wyatt Academy administrators learned of the fight the same day, activists with Our Voice Our Schools complain that no action was taken against staff members until the group released the video. The school board has hired an outside investigator. Denver Public Schools officials didn’t learn about the fight until May 17.

State park on Western Slope closed after fire. JUNCTION» A brush GRAND fire that threatened the Island Acres Campground at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park on Friday near Grand Junction moved away from the park, but the campground was closed Saturday as fire crews put out hot spots. All 77 campsites at the Island Acres Campground were evacuated Friday evening. Park Manager Pete Firmin said there was no damage to park infrastructure. “With winds coming, high temperatures and low humidity, we’re going to need to keep the park closed,” Firmin said. He said Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff members were planning to evaluate conditions late Saturday to determine when they would be able to reopen the park for campers.

National veterans cemetery dedicated. SPRINGS» A national COLORADO veterans cemetery two decades in the making was dedicated Friday.

The Pikes Peak National Veterans Cemetery is expected to accept its first burials in October. The property is pastureland and has a view of Cheyenne Mountain and Pikes Peak.

Retired Army Col. Vic Fernandez and Colorado’s congressional delegation aided the two-decade lobbying campaign for the cemetery. The Department of Veterans Affairs had maintained that Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver adequately served the state’s needs.

Randy Reeves, VA undersecretary for memorial affairs, said the cemetery will honor the region’s dead and keep their memories alive.
