Rox leave bases loaded in 9th

-

Ahead of Saturday night’s game against Cincinnati at Coors Field, the Rockies recalled Ryan Mcmahon from Triple-a Albuquerque. The 23-year-old started at second base Saturday.

Mcmahon began the season in Denver before being optioned May 1 with a .180 batting average and 22 strikeouts in 50 at-bats.

Since being sent down, Mcmahon hit .253 in 91 at-bats with 32 strikeouts and three homers.

Infielder Pat Valaika, called up on May 14 due to DJ Lemahieu’s thumb injury, was optioned to Triple-a to make room for Mcmahon. He is hitting .120 in 75 big league at-bats this season. Former Rockies closer heads to DL PITTSBURGH» The St. Louis Cardinals have placed struggling reliever Greg Holland on the disabled list with a right hip impingement.

The Cardinals made the move Saturday after Holland’s ERA ballooned to 9.45 following a bumpy inning of work Friday night in an 8-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Holland, a threetime All Star, allowed two runs on three hits. He has surrendered two runs in each of his last four appearances.

Manager Mike Matheny gave no timetable for Holland’s possible return.

St. Louis activated left-handed reliever Tyler Lyons (back strain) and catcher Carson Kelly (hamstring) off the disabled list. To make room for Kelly, the Cardinals optioned catcher Steve Baron to Triple-a Memphis.

Cubs place Darvish on DL

The Chicago Cubs placed Yu Darvish on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with right triceps tendinitis, continuing a rough season for the right-hander.

The Cubs also optioned catcher Victor Caratini to Triple-a Iowa before their game against San Francisco. Veteran catcher Chris Gimenez and left-handed reliever Randy Rosario were brought up from the minors, and infielder Efren Navarro was designated for assignment.

Darvish is 1-3 with a 4.95 ERA in his first season after finalizing a $126 million, six-year deal with the Cubs in February. He was slated to start the series finale against the Giants on Sunday night, but Tyler Chatwood will move up a day to take his place.

The 31-year-old Darvish had been showing signs of a turnaround, pitching six innings of two-hit ball last Sunday at Cincinnati for his first win with his new team. He has allowed just two runs and five hits in his last 10 innings. — The Associated Press
