DE NIRO APOLOGIZES TO CANADIANS

-

When Robert De Niro stepped up to the microphone at an event in Toronto on Monday morning, he had a few more choice words to say about President Donald Trump.

But unlike the expletivefilled rant that earned him a standing ovation at the Tony Awards less than 24 hours earlier, the Oscarwinning actor instead took a PG approach, apologizing to Canadians for Trump’s “idiotic behavior.”

“I just want to make a note of apology for the idiotic behavior of my president,” De Niro said, his comment prompting loud cheers and claps from the crowd.

The actor was attending a groundbreaking ceremony for a new development in downtown Toronto along with celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. De Niro is a co-owner of the Nobu restaurant business.

Border agent shot, wounded on Arizona ranch.

PHOENIX

» A U.S. Border Patrol agent was wounded in a shooting on an Arizona ranch near the U.S.-Mexico border before dawn Tuesday in a remote area known for drug and migrant smuggling, the agency and the cattleman who owns the property said.

The agent was taken to a hospital after the 4:30 a.m. shooting near the community of Arivaca and several people were detained, a Border Patrol Statement said, providing no information on the agent’s injuries or the circumstances of the shooting.

Jim Chilton, a fifth-generation Arizona cattleman who runs the 50,000-acre (20,230-hectare) ranch, told The Associated Press in an interview that the Border Patrol sent him an email saying the agent was alone when he was wounded on the ranch and was struck in the leg and the hand.

U.N. and Myanmar sign deal to resettle Rohingya refugees, but noone knows what’s in it.

Last week, the United Nations inked a deal with the government of Myanmar to begin the long process of resettling some of the 700,000 Rohingya refugees who fled their homes for neighboring Bangladesh after a brutal military campaign last year.

The Burmese government promoted the agreement as proof that it is doing right by the Rohingya, a persecuted minority that is denied citizenship rights and freedom of movement in Myanmar. The United Nations has celebrated it as a major first step that would help secure the future of the Rohingya in Myanmar, also called Burma.

But no outside observers are able to verify the claims: The agreement has been kept unusually secret.

Macedonia makes name change deal with Greece.

» Greece ATHENS, GREECE and Macedonia reached a historic agreement Tuesday to end a bitter 27-year name dispute that had kept the smaller and younger country out of international institutions such as NATO, the two countries’ prime ministers announced.

Greece’s Alexis Tsipras and Macedonia’s Zoran Zaev said the former Yugoslav republic’s new name for both domestic and international purposes would be Republic of North Macedonia. Macedonia will also amend its constitution to reflect the change as part of the deal.

The nationality of the country’s citizens will be listed on official documents in English as “Macedonian/citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia,” Greek officials said. — Denver Post wire services
