AVALANCHE: First-round picks Bowers, Kaut headline this weekend’s development camp roster.
Boston University’s Shane Bowers and Czech Republic professional Martin Kaut headline a list of young talent scheduled to participate in the Avalanche’s development camp, which begins Friday at Family Sports Center in Centennial.
The Avs obtained Bowers, the 2017 firstround draft pick of the Ottawa Senators, in the Nov. 5 trade of Matt Duchene. Bowers had a terrific freshman season at BU, producing 17 goals and 32 points in 40 games.
He was the Terriers’ secondyoungest player behind 2018 firstround draft pick Brady Tkachuk, who went sixth overall to Ottawa last weekend.
The Avalanche selected Kaut with the 16th pick in the first round last week in Dallas. He will compete alongside 17 other forwards, including 2016 secondround draft pick Cam Morrison of Notre Dame and 2018 thirdrounder Sampo Ranta of Finland, who is committed to Wisconsin.
University of Denver forward Logan O’Connor is a camp invite as an undrafted free agent.
The camp’s sevenmember defensive corps includes exciting draftees Cale Makar (University of Massachusetts), Conor Timmins (Sault Ste. Marie, OHL) and Josh Anderson (Swift Current, WHL). Makar was selected No. 4 overall in 2017 before Timmins became the first pick of the second round (32nd). Anderson was the Avs’ thirdround pick (71) in 2016.
Makar has said he will return to UMass for his sophomore year, but Timmins, who has signed his threeyear, entrylevel contract, is expected to compete for a spot with the Avs out of training camp in September.
Four goalies will compete at the camp, including Colorado’s toptwodrafted goalies in 2017 (Petr Kvaca) and 2018 (Justus Annunen). Recent freeagent signee Pavel Francouz, 28, of the Czech Republic will be the oldest player at the camp.
