BRONCOS WIDE RECEIVER SANDERS PLEADS GUILTY TO TRAFFIC CHARGE

Denver Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders has settled a Douglas County traffic case, pleading guilty to a “lane usage violation” and paying a $50 fine.

Sanders was running late for a Broncos practice on Aug. 22, 2017, when he got into a traffic collision.

Driving a Range Rover down a median, with emergency blinkers flashing, Sanders’ SUV collided with another vehicle when an 18-year-old driver cut into the median.

At the time of the accident, Sanders told deputies he was “running late for work” and “trying to get around traffic.”

The collision happened at about 7:45 a.m. on southbound South Chambers Road near Mainstreet in Parker. No one was seriously injured in the collision. An additional traffic count was dismissed Monday and the case is closed.

Jolon Clark takes over from Albus Brooks as Denver City Council president.

Denver City Council chose new leadership on Monday, naming Jolon Clark as the council’s new president and Stacie Gilmore as the president pro-tem.

Clark takes over from Albus Brooks, who served two terms as council president.

Both Clark and Gilmore were elected to the council in 2015, with Clark representi­ng District 7 and Gilmore serving District 11.

“I am excited and honored to have the opportunit­y to serve the council as president over the next year, and I look forward to working with Councilwom­an Gilmore to forge a path for this council to tackle the difficult issues that Denver is facing,” Clark said in a statement Monday.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock gave a shout-out to Brooks during his State of the City speech Monday morning, lauding him for twice surviving bouts of cancer.

The council president presides over council meetings, determines the council committees and serves as a member of all the committees.

Clark said he would announce some committee membership changes in next few days.

Colorado Springs police arrest suspect on suspicion of first-degree murder.

A suspect in a Colorado Springs homicide case has been arrested, police said.

Mark Christophe­r Peters, 46, has been taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder, police said Monday afternoon.

Peters is accused of a fatal shooting Friday in the 3400 block of Galleria Terrace.

Officers found the body of a woman inside a home and Peters, who was wanted on felony warrants in a separate criminal case, was identified as a suspect in the woman’s death.

Colorado man sentenced to 32 years for baby’s death.

Springs man has been sentenced to 32 years in prison in the death of his 6-week-old son last year.

District Judge Marla Prudek handed down the sentence Monday on 22-year-old John L. Ostrander, who had pleaded guilty earlier to child abuse resulting in death.

It was the maximum sentence available under a plea agreement reached with prosecutor­s.

Authoritie­s say Zayden Lee Ostrander died in February 2017. The coroner found that the baby had no fat in his body and his skin hung loose.

The boy’s mother, Donica Mirabal, is charged with murder. Her case is still pending.
