MAN TURNS IN WALLET WITH $4,000 INSIDE

AURORA» Police say they were able to return a wallet with more than $4,000 inside to its owner, thanks to the honesty of a stranger.

KMGH-TV reported Wednesday that Zach Shields found the wallet in his apartment complex’s parking lot. He turned it in to Aurora police, who found the owner and returned the wallet to her.

Shields says he doesn’t expect anything in return. He simply wanted to do the right thing.

As a new teacher, he hopes to pass along that lesson to his students.

U.S. Department of Transporta­tion announces $4.3 million grant to Colorado airports.

The U.S. Department of Transporta­tion announced Thursday that the Federal Aviation Administra­tion will award $4.3 million in infrastruc­ture grants to some Colorado airports.

The funds are part of the second installmen­t of the national $3.18 billion Airport Improvemen­t Program.

Infrastruc­ture improvemen­t includes work on runways, taxiways and terminal projects.

“These Airport Improvemen­t Program grants will ensure that safer, more efficient Colorado airports remain an economic engine and vital infrastruc­ture component for its community,” U.S. Secretary of Transporta­tion Elaine Chao said.

The 13 Colorado grants include $191,500 to Boulder for runway improvemen­ts, $300,000 for a master plan study at Centennial Airport, $300,000 for taxiway constructi­on at Longmont’s Vance Brad airport and $250,000 for a state system plan study.

Housing authority board forces former member to sell home.

ASPEN» A former housing authority board member who illegally rented her taxpayersu­bsidized home on Airbnb is being forced to sell her three-bedroom unit in Aspen.

The Aspen Times reports the Aspen-Pitkin County Housing Authority board voted Wednesday that Renee West must sell the property at Aspen Highlands.

West’s violations to the deed restrictio­n and housing authority guidelines include leasing the home, using it as an income-producing asset and engaging in business activity on the property.

West says she rented her home because she was struggling financiall­y and unable to work after an injury. She says she used the money to help pay the mortgage and HOA dues.

The Aspen-Pitkin County Housing Authority says the maximum value of the home is $208,931.

Colorado suspends license for youth detention facility.

The state suspended the license of a company operating a youth detention facility after determinin­g teen girls were no longer safe.

KMGH-TV reports the decision followed a July 7 incident at the Betty K. Marler Youth Service Center in south suburban Denver.

Some girls climbed onto the roof of a building and threatened to assault anyone who approached. One reportedly threatened to jump off, and others engaged in sexual behavior.

The state says after returning to their units, three girls used glass from a broken light to cut themselves, causing injuries that required stitches.

The health department says the facility was under a performanc­e improvemen­t plan at the time. The state suspended the license of Rite of Passage Inc. and moved the girls to other facilities.
