POLICE ARREST WOMAN AFTER DENVER FATAL SHOOTING
Denver police arrested Brittany Lyons, 25, in connection with the fatal shooting of a man around 2:30 a.m. Monday. She is being detained for investigation of second-degree murder.
Police said Lyons and the victim knew each other, although the circumstances of the alleged shooting remain under investigation.
According to the statement of probable cause, police initially responded to a call from a worker at LaMar’s Donuts located at 990 W. Ninth Ave. The employee reported seeing a man on the ground near the store. The employee asked a woman and child standing nearby if they needed help. The woman identified herself as Lyons.
When officers arrived at the scene, police said Lyons was holding a 9mm handgun that was “stove piped,” meaning an empty cartridge was stuck in the ejection port of the gun. The victim was taken to Denver Health Medical Center and pronounced dead around 2:51 a.m.
Suit: Colorado sheriff’s policy violates immigrants’ rights.
DENVER» A lawsuit is arguing that a Colorado sheriff’s office cannot hold inmates at immigration authorities’ request once they have posted bond.
The Colorado American Civil Liberties Union filed the suit on behalf of a man being held by the Teller County Sheriff’s Office.
A spokesman said he could not comment because Sheriff Jason Mikesell had not received a copy of the lawsuit.
The ACLU filed a similar suit in February against El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder on behalf of two men being held in the jail at immigration authorities’ request.
