BODY OF TEXAS MAN FOUND IN BIG THOMPSON

COUNTY» A body LARIMER was found Friday in the Big Thompson River after a man notified the sheriff’s office that his brother had gone missing.

The victim is a 37-yearold Texas man. The Larimer County coroner’s office will determine cause and manner of death and will release the identity of the victim.

The sheriff’s office was notified about 12:35 a.m. Friday that the Texas man was missing. He was last seen by his brother about 9 p.m. on U.S. 34 in the Big Thompson Canyon. The two had planned to spend the night at a cabin, about one-half mile from where they had parked. They got separated in the dark, however, and the 37-year-old didn’t make it to the cabin. The brother and friends searched for him to no avail and later contacted authoritie­s.

Friday morning, a Larimer County Search & Rescue team began looking for the man. About 9:20 a.m., a fisherman notified searchers of a body in the river.

HUD secretary to visit Aurora.

U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Developmen­t Ben Carson will visit Aurora on Monday afternoon to tour the Village at Westerly Creek. Carson will visit the East Kentucky Avenue apartment complex and speak with residents along with Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., and Mayor Bob LeGare. Carson also will discuss Aurora’s Opportunit­y Zones, which offer businesses tax breaks to encourage investment in low-income communitie­s.

Men rescue girl from fast-moving water in irrigation canal.

Two men rescued a girl from the fast-moving water of an irrigation canal. Firefighte­rs in Grand Junction say the men spotted the child in the Grand Valley Canal shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday. One man jumped in, grabbed her and held her up while treading water. Fire department spokesman Dirk Clingman said the other man, who was half in the water, helped keep them both afloat. Clingman told The Daily Sentinel the men got the child out of the water, but they were exhausted and were “just kind of clinging on for dear life” to the edge of the canal. Firefighte­rs pulled them out of the water. Clingman said the men saved the girl’s life. He did not know their names.

Man gets 80 years for fatal shooting.

An Ohio man was sentenced to 80 years in prison for shooting and killing a man during a drug deal. The Coloradoan reports 21-year-old Lawrence Greggs of Cincinnati was sentenced Thursday for the Aug. 26, 2016, death of 20-year-old Devon Smeltz. Greggs previously pleaded guilty to seconddegr­ee murder and aggravated robbery. Prosecutor­s say he and two other men from Cincinnati drove to Colorado to buy cocaine from Smeltz.
