RTD rolls out rules for scooters

- By Chaney Skilling

Denver’s Regional Transportation District released its dockless bike and scooter rules Friday after Denver approved permits for five dockless scooter and two dockless bike companies earlier this week.

Along with being prohibited on any RTD transit vehicle, the rules are:

•All shared dockless bikes and scooters parked at RTD stations or on RTD property must be placed in an upright position and adjacent to existing bike parking racks.

•Parked dockless bikes and/or scooters must not impede pedestrian flow and must not block ADA ramps. There must be at least three feet of sidewalk clearance to allow for passage of mobility devices such as wheelchairs.

•Dockless bikes and scooters are not permitted to be ridden in transit vehicle lanes, in transit platform areas or on the 16th Street Mall. Riders must dismount when entering these areas.

RTD plans to add and paint designated parking spaces for the bikes and scooters at transit stations in the upcoming months based on demand, according to the RTD statement released Friday. Customers are encouraged to report improperly parked bike and scooters at transit stations via RTD’s Transit Watch app, which is available for all Apple and Android mobile devices.

In case of any problems with the actual vehicles, RTD advises riders to contact the appropriate rental company directly.

These rules come after Denver granted permits to five dockless scooter companies as part of its oneyear pilot program that tests whether bikes and scooter share programs can help the city reduce singleoccupant commutes.
