Bryce Bobo was told by his agent last week that a possible NFL opportunity was in the offing. But that didn’t change his reaction when his phone rang Thursday.

“My agent said, ‘The Broncos want you,’ and I was like, ‘Wait, what?’” Bobo said Friday after participating in his first training camp practice. “He said, ‘You’re hopping on a plane. Pack your stuff and get going.’ ”

And with that, Bobo, who was driving to a workout facility in Anaheim, Calif., was detoured to Denver. The Broncos waived/injured receiver Kenny Bell (hamstring) to make room for Bobo.

Bobo, 6-foot-2, played at Colorado and finished his career with 150 catches and 1,638 receiving yards, seventh and 11th best in team history, respectively. Despite his desirable size, Bobo was not drafted and his only interest came from Seattle at rookie camp.

“There were times when I doubted if I would play football again,” Bobo said. “It felt good finally getting back and playing football. I had been training and waiting for a team to give me a shot and the Broncos were the team to do it.”

Bobo, 23, joins former Colorado teammate Phillip Lindsay as Broncos rookies. Bobo is at the bottom of the depth chart, but at least he is in a camp and if he plays in the preseason, the other 31 teams will be able to evaluate his performance.

Bobo hopes his experience with the Seahawks, where he received a playbook crash course, will help him with the Broncos. “(Learning) playbooks and schemes (quickly) is what I do,” he said.

Bobo had 62 catches for 693 yards and four touchdowns for CU as a senior.

“I’m blessed to be back in Colorado, a place I’m familiar with,” he said. “It feels like my second home.”

Bell injured his hamstring in minicamp in mid-June and sustained another hamstring injury after rookies and first-year players reported to training camp. He had not participated in a practice.
