WR Williams to miss scrimmage with injury

- By Sean Star Loveland Reporter-Herald

FORT COLLINS» Preston Williams’ up-and-down 2018 training camp continues. The talented transfer from Tennessee was reinstated from suspension by Colorado State head football coach Mike Bobo last Friday when the Rams opened practice for the season.

But a week later, Williams — who in 2017 was suspended while also sitting out as a Division I transfer — will not participate in the Rams’ first scrimmage on Saturday because of a groin injury he suffered during practice on Thursday.

“We don’t think (it’s serious),” Bobo said Friday. “He’s got decent strength. He kinda felt something earlier in practice (on Thursday), and then came back and practiced a few more periods, and then hurt it in a one-on-one drill in the red zone. I think he’s close to being able to go, but probably hold him.”

Bobo also said defensive lineman Toby McBride, cornerback Darius Campbell, cornerback Christian Cumber and receiver Darius Wise are also likely to be out or limited.

With the departure of Biletnikoff Award finalist Michael Gallup, Williams is expected to play a big role for the Rams this fall. Originally a four-star recruit from Lovejoy, Georgia, the 6-foot-4 wideout had 16 catches for 247 yards in seven total games over two seasons at Tennessee before transferring to CSU midway through the 2016 campaign.

Coinciding with CSU’s annual Community Open House, Saturday’s scrimmage begins at 1 p.m. at Canvas Stadium and is free and open to the public. North gates open at 11 a.m.

Those attending the scrimmage won’t see much of the Rams’ playbook on either side of the ball.

“We’re not gonna do a lot in this scrimmage schematically,” Bobo said. “We want to do some base stuff where guys don’t have to think and we see who can play football.”

Bobo added that he’ll be keying on fundamentals, things like getting off blocks, making formations adjustments at the line of scrimmage and tackling. Offensively, expect the Rams to pass more than they run, which Bobo says he usually does for scrimmages to help keep his running backs healthy.

Boddie back:

Bobo also announced Friday that running back Rashaad Boddie has returned from suspension. Bobo said Monday Boddie had been suspended indefinitely.

When asked if everything was good with the bruising back, Bobo simply said: “right now.”

Boddie was one of three players who were suspended for the first half of the team’s New Mexico Bowl loss to Marshall last December. He logged 28 snaps in the game but did not have a carry or a catch. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound back had 44 carries for 254 yards (5.8 ypc) and four touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2017.
