DUCKS SIGN GIBSON TO EIGHT-YEAR, $51.2 MILLION EXTENSION

CALIF.» Goalie John Gibson ANAHEIM, has agreed to an eight-year, $51.2 million contract extension with the Anaheim Ducks.

The team announced the deal Saturday. Gibson is signed through the 2026-27 season.

After breaking into the NHL in 2014, Gibson has been a steady starter for the Ducks for the past three years. He set career highs last season with 31 victories and a .926 save percentage while playing in 60 games.

The 25-year-old Gibson also has appeared in 26 playoff games over four postseason campaigns with the Ducks. Gibson has the highest career save percentage among any goalie to appear in at least 150 NHL games since 1955-56.

Golden Knights sign Karlsson to $5.25M, 1-year deal. VEGAS» The

Vegas Golden Knights signed forward William Karlsson to a $5.25 million, one-year contract.

General manager George Mcphee announced the deal Saturday as the two sides avoided arbitratio­n. Karlsson gets a significan­t raise from his previous $1 million salary.

Karlsson shattered career highs with 43 goals, 35 assists and 48 points last season. He won the Lady Byng Award for sportsmans­hip and gentlemanl­y conduct with a high standard of play.

Serena Williams out of Rogers Cup tournament for personal reasons. MONTREAL» Serena Williams has pulled out of this week’s Rogers Cup hard-court tournament, citing personal reasons.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is coming off the most lopsided defeat of her career — a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Johanna Konta in San Jose, Calif., on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old Williams was the runner-up at Wimbledon last month. That was just her fourth tournament since returning to the tour after having a baby last September.

This year’s last major tournament, the U.S. Open, starts Aug. 27.

Pornanong singing to keep lead at Women’s British Open.

LYTHAM ST. ENGLAND» Pornanong Phatlum ANNES, made the Royal Lytham course sing for her again as she held on to her overnight one-shot lead at the Women’s British Open after the third round Saturday.

Pornanong has been singing Thai songs in her head to calm herself on a links course she admits to struggling on — though any struggling by her hasn’t been apparent, yet.

She was at 13-under-par overall, one stroke ahead of playing partner Georgina Hall of England, whose scrambling through an erratic round also kept her in contention for a first major title.

Rangers’ Deshields placed on DL with post-concussion syndrome.

ARLINGTON, fielder Delino Deshields has been placed on the disabled list with postconcus­sion syndrome more than three weeks after banging the back of his head when trying to make a sliding catch.

The Rangers announced the move Saturday, a day after Deshields was scratched from the starting lineup because of headaches and placed on MLB’S seven-day concussion DL.

Deshields hit his head in the sixth inning of a game at Boston on July 11.

Cards outfielder Fowler breaks his foot. PITTSBURGH» Dexter Fowler’s difficult season has taken another downturn. The St. Louis Cardinals outfielder has suffered a broken left foot and will have to wear a walking boot for one month.

Fowler was put on the 10-day disabled list prior to Saturday night’s game with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 32-year-old Fowler was removed in the eighth inning of Friday night’s 7-6 loss to the Pirates. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Fowler was injured earlier in the game when he fouled a ball off the foot.
