NEW VERSION OF ANDROID, “PIE,” ROLLS OUT
The next version of Google’s Android system, called Pie, is now available.
It will use artificial intelligence to adapt to how you use the device. For instance, Android will set screen brightness by studying your manual adjustments, rather than automatically switching to a certain level based on ambient light.
Google names its Android versions after sweet treats, such as Marshmallow. Google chose Pie in part because an upcoming feature called Slices will try to offer slices of information from your favorite apps without opening them.
You’ll be able to start testing features aimed at improving people’s digital well-being, including a “wind down” mode that will fade the screen to grey at a designated time to help you disconnect before bed.
Singapore minister: Major cyberattack may be state-linked.
SINGAPORE» A cyberattack that breached 1.5 million health records in Singapore has been attributed to sophisticated attackers who may be state-linked, a Cabinet minister said Monday.
S. Iswaran, minister for communications and information, said in Parliament that the government’s detailed analysis of last month’s cyberattack on SingHealth records found it was the work of an “advanced persistent threat” group.
Such groups comprise sophisticated cyberattackers and are typically state-linked groups “who conduct extended, carefully planned cyber campaigns, to steal information or disrupt operations,” Iswaran said.
German factory orders down 4 percent in June.
BERLIN» Official data show that factory orders in Germany dropped a steep 4 percent in June compared with the previous month, led lower by a drop in demand from outside the eurozone.
The figure released Monday by the Economy Ministry compared with a gain of 2.6 percent the previous month. The ministry said that orders in the second quarter were down 1.6 percent overall compared with the previous quarter, largely because of lower demand for investment goods such as factory machinery.
In June, orders from inside Germany were down 2.8 percent and those from other countries in the 19-nation eurozone dropped 2.7 percent. Orders from outside the eurozone fell 5.9 percent.
The German economy, Europe’s biggest, remains robust, with business confidence high and unemployment low despite some disappointing data this year.
Eurozone rescue fund pays final bailout loan to Greece.
BRUSSELS
» A rescue fund set up to help euro-using countries paid its final 15 billion-euro ($17.3 billion) bailout loan to Greece on Monday after objections by Germany delayed the payment by several weeks.
The European Stability Mechanism said 9.5 billion euros (nearly $11 billion) of the loan would go toward a cash buffer Greece could use to meet its financial needs for almost two years.
The other 5.5 billion euros ($6.4 billion) was earmarked for paying off some of the country’s considerable debt.
The Greek government hailed the payment as “the last act of the bailout drama.”
