-

A 28-year-old mother suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol with her 2-year-old daughter in her car, resulting in a Friday crash that killed her child on Interstate 70, could face vehicular homicide charges, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

State Patrol Trooper Gary Cutler said the agency was recommending vehicular homicide charges to the Jefferson County District Attorney, who will decide whether to file charges.

A silver Pontiac driven by the 28year-old mother was headed east on I-70 near Lookout Mountain when the driver crossed over the median and crashed into a westbound pickup truck.

Investigators suspected the Pontiac driver had been drinking while driving. The mother was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.

Southwestern Colorado missing out so far on monsoon season. DURANGO» The Durango Herald reports that while Arizona and New Mexico have received above average rainfall this summer, a high pressure system is keeping the stream of moisture from hitting southwestern Colorado.

Matthew Rosencrans, a meteorologist for the Climate Prediction Center, said high pressure is extending from the northwestern United States down through the Great Basin to southwestern Colorado, rather than receding to the Northwest as it typically does in summer.

The region has gotten some modest rainfall in the past few weeks, but San Juan National Forest fire management officer Richard Bustamante said firefighters have responded to nearly 60 new fires in two weeks.

Aurora honors police pooches. Some important members of the Aurora Police Department are being recognized for their crime-fighting contributions, but these team assets might prefer belly rubs and head pats to medals of honor.

K-9 Bandit and the dog’s human Officer Ewert recently responded to a home where a wanted person inside refused to come out and surrender peacefully, according to a Facebook post from the Aurora Police K-9 unit.

Bandit was sent in to sniff around and was able to find the suspect hiding in a crawlspace and ensure an arrest.

Another Aurora police pupper, K-9 Magnum, recently found a suspect in a tree and overgrowth that had prevented Magnum’s human colleagues from making the discovery.
