Bobo’s absence doesn’t change mission

- By Mike Brohard

Business as usual.

With Colorado State coach Mike Bobo sidelined by a medical issue for an unknown time, the process of getting the Rams ready for the Aug. 25 opener with Hawaii at Canvas Stadium has not changed.

Not a bit, because a plan has long been in place.

“Since really we got back in recruiting in May, our whole focus throughout the last part of spring and summer was to get a plan in place for each day for training camp, and we even actually prepare into the season the first couple of weeks,” offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Dave Johnson said after Tuesday’s practice. “We’ve had a plan in place since training camp started, so today is no different than what we planned to do no matter what is going on.”

Johnson noted the scripts were done and installation is complete for the offense, and has been for a few days. Now, it’s just carrying forward with the task at hand.

Both Johnson and defensive coordinator John Jancek met with the media after Tuesday’s workout, both touting the same structure within the workings of the football team. Position coaches are doing their tasks, as are the coordinators, trying not to skip a charted beat. Johnson did note that Ronnie Letson, as the assistant head coach, is picking up the administrative duties as they crop up on both sides of the ball.

As most people around the program have learned, Bobo is a very organized person and left final instructions before he headed to the hospital for testing on why he is experiencing numbness in his feet.

“Before Coach Bobo left, he gave us clear direction on what he wanted,” Jancek said. “He hired us to do our jobs, he trusts us, so that’s what we’re doing. We want to do what’s right, and we want to make Coach Bobo happy while he’s not here.”

Monday was the first day on the field Bobo missed, and afterward, the players noted his absence but felt the workout went well, thanks to the direction of the team leaders and the coaches they work with.
