BILLS QB ALLEN MOVES CLOSER TO BEING NO. 1

-

N.Y.» Rookie ORCHARD PARK, quarterback Josh Allen moved one step closer to becoming the Bills’ starter.

Coach Sean McDermott is providing the strongarmed, first-round draft pick from Wyoming his opportunity to win the job by naming him the starter in Buffalo’s preseason game against the Bengals on Sunday.

The team announced the decision on its Twitter account Monday night after Allen practiced with the first-string offense earlier in the day.

Allen’s chance comes after he showed continued improvement working with the second- and thirdstringers in Buffalo’s first two preseason games.

Redskins sign Peterson.

VA.» The Redskins ASHBURN, signed four-time all-pro running back Adrian Peterson.

Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa also visited the Redskins the past two days after several injuries at the position, with the team opting to sign Peterson and De’Veon Smith.

Peterson, 33, joins his fourth team as he enters what would be his 12th NFL season. The 2012 MVP is 12th all time in rushing with 12,276 yards and needs 37 to pass Jim Brown.

Vikes turn to Carlson.

MINN.» The Vikings EAGAN, completed their plan to turn over their kicking duties to rookie Daniel Carlson, releasing veteran Kai Forbath with two weeks remaining in the preseason.

For all the training camp drills and exhibition game extra points the Vikings can give Carlson, an alumnus of The Classical Academy in Colorado Springs, there’s no way for him to experience the pressure and scrutiny that comes with the job on a championship-chasing team.

“We’ll just see how it goes,” coach Mike Zimmer said after Forbath was let go. “You make your decision, and you live with it.”

Seahawks release Ryan.

He played for three head coaches in Seattle: Mike Holmgren in 2008, Jim Mora in 2009 and the past eight seasons for Pete Carroll. — The Associated Press
